&NBSP I was on guard duty on the bunker line in Phu Loi. It was my turn to sleep and I dozed off. I was abruptly awakened by the blood curdling screams of the guy I was on guard duty with. When my eyes finally focused on him, he had his back to me and was jumping up and down and his arms were flopping around like a chicken trying to fly. Still groggy with sleep, my immediate reaction was to think he had been hit and was suffering from phosphorous burns. Then he turned around and I saw it. There was an enormous rat with it's teeth sunk into his chest. Its back legs were flopping around every time he jumped but its head never budged as though the teeth were sunk into the bone. I was so relieved to see that it was a rat and that he had not been hit that I laughed hysterically at his predicament. I don' t remember how he got the rat off his chest, but I do remember the sergeant of the guard coming and hauling him away. I don't remember the man's name and I don't recall seeing him before that night. I never saw him again. I guess that's just one more reason not to fall asleep on the bunker line. Looking back I now realize how serious a rat bite could be and hope he's OK, and if you happen to be out there and read this I'm sorry I laughed but given the same situation I would probably laugh again.
